A Story of Honesty from Banahil
In Banahil, a village in Tehsil Kallar Syedan, Rawalpindi, a local cloth shop owner has drawn wide praise for an act of honesty that also settled a long running cloud of suspicion over the entire village. Naveed Hussain Bhatti, owner of Bhatti Cloth, returned a set of missing gold bangles that he found while cleaning the roof of his shop, more than two years after they had gone missing.
How the Bangles Went Missing
Some time ago, a female teacher was posted to the Government Girls Middle School in Banahil. She came from Sukrana village, and because of the distance, she rented a home in Banahil for the duration of her posting. When she was later transferred to another school, several villagers helped her move her household belongings.
During the move, some of her valuable jewelry went missing, including four gold bangles reportedly worth around 1.6 million rupees. Suspicion fell on the villagers who had helped with the move. The matter was later smoothed over by respected elders of the village, but the damage lingered: rather than four individuals, the whole of Banahil ended up carrying the shadow of the accusation.
An Unexpected Discovery
Roughly two to two and a half years later, Naveed Hussain was cleaning the roof of his shop when he came across an old box containing gold bangles. After checking them carefully, he phoned Chairman Chaudhry Sadaqat Hussain and explained that a teacher's bangles had gone missing some time earlier and that he believed these were the same ones. He asked the chairman to contact the teacher, ask her to describe the bangles, and hand them over in the chairman's presence.
Returned on Camera
Chaudhry Sadaqat and other respected members of the village then invited the teacher and her family, and the bangles were returned to them on camera. The teacher and her family thanked Naveed Hussain, and they also apologized to the villagers who had been suspected. With the bangles recovered, the people of Banahil were cleared of the allegation, while Naveed Hussain was widely praised for bringing honor to his family and his village.
A Lesson Worth Remembering
Locals have drawn a simple lesson from the episode: before accusing anyone of theft over a missing item, it is worth pausing to consider that the item may simply be misplaced, and that a hasty accusation can do lasting damage to people's dignity and reputation.
